Physical Description:
Girard Unified School District 248 is a rural school district comprising 263 square miles located in the southeast corner of Kansas. The majority of the land is used for agricultural purposes and is situated in Crawford County, with a small northwestern portion of the district being in Neosho County. The District has three schools:

Grades Pre-K thru 5
Approximately 500 Students
Built in 1954 - additions in 1972, 1974, 1978-79, 1987, 1995-96, 2015
Girard Middle School
Grades 6-8
Approximately 250 students
Converted to a middle school in 1962 - additions in 1964, 1966-67, 1995-96, 2015
Girard High School
Grades 9-12
Approximately 300 students
Rebuilt after a fire on October 24, 1964 - additions in 1966-67, 1995-96, 2015

The district currently serves approximately 1,035 students and enrollment is stable. Of those students, 45% are bused to school, and 48% qualify for free and reduced lunches. The average number of students per grade level is 90.
Personnel Description:
USD 248 currently includes six administrators: Mr. Blaise Bauer, Superintendent; Mr. Todd Ferguson, high school Principal; Mr. Chris Swartz, high school assistant Principal. Mr. BJ Pruitt, middle school Principal; and Mrs. Tina Daniel, elementary school Principal, Mrs. Joni Benso, elementary school assistant Principal. The district also employs two full-time technology staff: Mrs. Cindy Murphy, Technology Director/Integration Specialist and Mr. Chris Leritz, Technology Specialist, two registered nurses: Mrs. Tara Bowin and Mrs. Patricia Boore, and a registered dietitian: Mr. Korey Kimrey. USD 248 has 74 certified teachers whose teaching experience within the district averages 15 years. Those teachers' total teaching experience, including service in other districts, averages 16.6 years. The highest educational degree attainment for the certified staff is 50.7% with bachelor's degrees, 39.4% with master's degrees, 7.0% with specialist in education degrees, and 2.8% with doctor of philosophy degrees. Continued post-graduate education and in-service staff development are perceived as important by both teachers and administrators.
